Sustainability

Brewing Better. For Western Australia.
For Our Industry. For The Future.

At Spinifex Brewing Co., sustainability isn’t something we added to our business. It has been part of our journey from the very beginning.

When we chose to establish our production brewery at the Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia (FIPWA), we did so with a clear vision: to build more than a brewery. We wanted to create a business that could contribute to the future of Australian food and beverage manufacturing through innovation, collaboration and responsible production.

Today, that vision continues to grow through partnerships with leading researchers, government agencies, universities and technology companies that are helping redefine what’s possible in brewing.

Built for Innovation

Spinifex Brewing Co. proudly operates from the Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia (FIPWA) in the Peel region.

As one of the precinct’s original anchor tenants, we have been part of FIPWA’s vision from its early development, working alongside industry leaders to help establish Western Australia as a centre for food innovation, advanced manufacturing and sustainable production.

Being located within FIPWA gives us access to an exceptional network of expertise, including the Sustainable Innovative Food Technologies (SIFT) Centre, Murdoch University, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the Peel Development Commission, the Shire of Murray and the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre.

These partnerships allow us to participate in applied research, commercial technology trials and collaborative projects that create practical outcomes for industry while strengthening regional manufacturing capability.

Our brewery wasn’t simply built to produce great beer.
It was designed to be a place where innovation happens.

Putting Peel on the Map

The Peel region has become one of Australia’s most exciting centres for food and beverage innovation.

Spinifex is proud to contribute to that reputation by opening our brewery to researchers, technology providers and industry partners who are developing solutions with national and international potential.

Through our involvement in collaborative projects, we’re helping demonstrate how regional manufacturers can lead innovation, commercialise new technologies and create sustainable manufacturing practices that benefit entire industries.

Innovation developed in Peel has the potential to influence brewing across Australia.

A Circular Brewery

Traditional manufacturing often follows a simple model: take, make and dispose.

At Spinifex, we believe there’s a better way.

Our approach embraces the principles of the circular economy, where materials, water and organic resources are continually recovered, reused and repurposed rather than discarded.

Every stage of brewing creates opportunities to generate value beyond the beer itself.

Instead of asking, “How do we dispose of this?”, we ask, “How can this become a resource?”

That philosophy continues to guide our sustainability journey.

From Grain to Growth

Every brew begins with premium Western Australian grain.

After brewing, that grain still contains valuable nutrients, organic carbon and fibre.

For many years, Spinifex has worked with C-Wise to ensure these brewing by-products continue creating value long after the brewing process is complete.

Rather than becoming waste, spent grain is transformed into products that support healthier soils, improved agricultural productivity and long-term carbon retention.

By returning valuable organic matter back into the environment, we’re helping close the loop between agriculture and brewing.

The grain that helps produce our beer today can ultimately contribute to growing the crops of tomorrow.

That is the circular economy in action.

Turning Waste Into Opportunity

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond spent grain.

Through our research partnerships with Murdoch University and industry collaborators, we’re exploring how brewing by-products such as yeast, organic residues and wastewater can be transformed into valuable resources.

Research projects have investigated opportunities including:

  • carbon-rich soil products
  • regenerative agriculture
  • algae production
  • renewable biological products
  • nutrient recovery
  • improved manufacturing efficiency

Rather than viewing brewery by-products as waste, we’re continually exploring ways they can support new industries and create long-term environmental value.

Smarter Water Management

Water is one of brewing’s most valuable resources.

Spinifex is proud to be working with Hydroleap, Beanstalk AgTech and project partners through the PropaGATE program to evaluate advanced wastewater treatment technology designed specifically for food and beverage manufacturing.

Supported by the Grower Group Alliance and Peel Development Commission, this project is helping investigate smarter approaches to water treatment, nutrient recovery and operational efficiency.

The technology forms part of a broader vision to reduce environmental impact while improving the sustainability and competitiveness of Australian manufacturing.

Our brewery provides a real-world commercial environment where emerging technologies can be tested, refined and demonstrated for the wider industry.

Research That Makes a Difference

Innovation only matters if it creates practical outcomes.

Spinifex actively collaborates with universities, government agencies and technology companies to develop solutions that can be adopted by the broader food and beverage sector.

These projects help strengthen regional manufacturing capability, encourage knowledge sharing and support the commercialisation of new technologies.

By opening our brewery as a working innovation site, we’re helping bridge the gap between research and industry.

Strong Partnerships Deliver Better Outcomes

Meaningful sustainability is achieved through collaboration.

We are proud to work alongside organisations that share our commitment to innovation, regional development and responsible manufacturing.

Together, these organisations are helping create practical solutions that benefit not only Spinifex, but the wider brewing, food and beverage industries.

Our innovation partners include:

Looking Forward

Sustainability isn’t a destination.

It’s a commitment to continually improving the way we operate, embracing innovation and finding better ways to use the resources entrusted to us.

As our brewery continues to grow, so too does our responsibility to lead by example.

By investing in research, embracing the circular economy and collaborating with industry leaders, we’re helping shape a more sustainable future for brewing in Western Australia.

Because great breweries don’t simply make great beer.

They create lasting value for their communities, their industry and the environment.
